Hair Transplant in Riga – Rubenhair Clinic
Hair loss is common, but it is often treatable. Rubenhair clinic in Riga offers manual FUE hair transplant – a scar-free method that moves your own hair follicles into thinning areas. We have 10+ years of experience and have helped 5000+ patients. Consultation and care are available in English, Estonian and Russian, and Riga is just about a 1 h 35 min flight from Tallinn.
On this page we explain what a hair transplant is, how the FUE method works, who is a candidate, how the procedure unfolds, and what to expect from results and recovery. Results are always individual.
What is a hair transplant?
A hair transplant is a cosmetic surgical procedure in which healthy hair follicles are taken from a donor area of the scalp (usually the back and sides) and placed into thinning or balding areas. Donor-area hair is genetically more resistant to loss, so the transplanted hair continues to grow in its new location.
The procedure is mainly suited to androgenetic alopecia (hereditary thinning), as well as hairline correction and scar coverage. The goal is a natural, lasting result that suits your facial features and the natural direction of hair growth. Every case is different, so suitability is always assessed individually at a free consultation.
The manual FUE method at Rubenhair (scar-free)
FUE, or Follicular Unit Extraction, means removing follicles one by one from the donor area. At Rubenhair we use the manual FUE method, in which the surgeon extracts each follicle by hand, with controlled precision. Unlike older strip (FUT) techniques, manual FUE leaves no linear scar and no stitches – only tiny, almost invisible marks remain in the donor area, and they heal quickly.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and is outpatient – there is no overnight hospital stay. The manual approach lets the surgeon respect the growth direction and angle of each follicle so the hairline looks natural.
FUE vs DHI – which method to choose?
Both FUE and DHI transplant follicles one by one; the difference is in how they are implanted. With classic FUE, small channels are first created in the recipient area and the follicles are then placed. With DHI (Direct Hair Implantation), a special Choi implanter pen opens and implants the follicle in a single motion – this can give a dense result and may suit, for example, hairline densification.
We choose the most suitable method together with you at the consultation, based on your donor area, the density you want and the area treated. Read more: DHI hair transplant.
Who is a candidate for a hair transplant?
A hair transplant suits adults with stable thinning and a sufficient donor area. Assessment uses standard scales: the Norwood scale (NW2–NW5+) for men and the Ludwig scale for women. The procedure suits both men and women.
- Men: receding hairline, thinning temples, thinning crown.
- Women: diffuse thinning at the crown or hairline correction – see hair transplant for women.
A good candidate has stabilised hair loss and realistic expectations. With active, undiagnosed loss, PRP treatment or other supportive therapy may be advisable first. Suitability is decided by the surgeon at the consultation.
How the procedure works, step by step
A typical hair-transplant day at Rubenhair proceeds as follows:
- 1. Consultation and planning: the surgeon assesses the donor area, draws the new hairline and agrees on the number of grafts.
- 2. Preparation: the donor area is prepared and local anaesthetic is applied.
- 3. Follicle extraction: the surgeon extracts follicles one by one using the manual FUE method.
- 4. Channel creation / implantation: the recipient area is prepared and follicles are placed following the natural growth direction.
- 5. Finishing and instructions: you receive written aftercare instructions and a follow-up if needed.
The procedure usually takes several hours depending on the number of grafts and is completed in a single day.
Results and timeline
Results are not immediate and develop gradually. In the first weeks it is normal for the transplanted hairs to shed temporarily (so-called shock loss) – the follicle stays in place and soon begins to grow a new hair. New growth is usually noticeable after a few months, and the full result appears over roughly 8–12 months, as the hair becomes thicker and denser.
Transplanted hair is genetically resistant and, as a rule, lasts for the long term. The result is always individual and depends on your hair type, donor area and aftercare. The goal is a natural, lasting result, not a guaranteed final density.
Recovery – what to expect
Recovery after manual FUE is usually quick and outpatient. In the first days you may see mild swelling and redness. Small scabs in the donor and recipient areas heal within about 7–14 days.
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first few nights to reduce swelling.
- Avoid rubbing the treated area and direct sun.
- Avoid intense exercise and saunas for about 2–4 weeks.
- Follow the clinic's washing and aftercare instructions.
Many people return to office work within a few days. Your surgeon will give precise, individual instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a hair transplant painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so pain is usually not felt during the procedure. Once the anaesthetic wears off there may be mild discomfort, which can be eased with the pain relief recommended by your surgeon.
When will I see the results of a hair transplant?
The transplanted hairs first shed temporarily, then new growth begins. The full result usually appears over about 8–12 months. The result is individual and depends on your hair type and aftercare.
Does the FUE method leave a scar?
Manual FUE is a scar-free method – there is no linear scar and no stitches. Only tiny dot-like marks remain in the donor area; they heal quickly and are almost invisible with short hair.
How long does recovery take?
Small scabs heal within about 7–14 days, and many people return to office work within a few days. Intense exercise and saunas are best avoided for about 2–4 weeks. Your surgeon will give precise instructions.
How much does a hair transplant cost?
The price is based on the number of grafts, from €2–3 per graft. Depending on the extent of thinning, it ranges roughly from ~€1,600 (NW2) to ~€7,500 (NW5). The final price is set at your free consultation. See the cost page.
Is a hair transplant suitable for women?
Yes. Hair transplants suit both men and women. Thinning in women is assessed using the Ludwig scale. Learn more on our hair transplant for women page.
What is the difference between FUE and DHI?
Both transplant follicles one by one. With DHI, the follicle is implanted with a Choi pen in a single motion, which can give a very dense result. We choose the best method at the consultation. See DHI hair transplant.
Does PRP treatment replace a hair transplant?
No. PRP treatment is a supportive therapy that may support hair health, but it does not replace a transplant. The evidence base is still developing. Read more: PRP treatment.
